EV Charging Adoption for Supermarket Carparks

Every little helps?

Something big is happening at UK supermarkets. Recent research by the RAC and Zapmap shows that one in every ten supermarkets now has electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. In 2023 alone, there was a whopping 59% increase.

Leading the way is Tesco, with over 1,305 charging points already in place. Sainsbury’s isn’t far behind, with plans to deploy 750 charging bays by the end of the year. It’s a clear sign of things to come.

Charge while you shop.

While no one was particularly expecting supermarkets to lead the charge on EV charging, it makes a lot of sense.

Zapmap found that a lot of EV drivers like to charge up while they do their weekly shop. In fact, more than 35% of people surveyed said they make charging part of their shopping routine.

Beyond Retail.

But it’s not just about supermarkets. In the UK around 15% of us already drive EVs, and that number is projected to increase dramatically in the coming years. The growth of commercial charging spots at supermarkets shows how all businesses can play a pivotal role in driving sustainable change.

Practically speaking, as more and more staff and customers drive EVs, charging stations are fast becoming a must-have facility for any organisation with significant parking capacity.

Good for Business.

From a commercial perspective, offering EV charging stations has a host of benefits. First, it reinforces your brand reputation as innovative, responsible, and modern.

Businesses that install charging points can position themselves as leaders on sustainability, attracting an increasingly climate-conscious consumer base.

EV charging also offers business the potential for a new revenue stream, offsetting the initial investment.

Good for the planet.

EVs produce fewer harmful emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars. The more electric cars on the road, the cleaner our air becomes. This helps reduce pollution and fights climate change, making our planet a healthier place to live for everyone.

For businesses, installing EV charging points is a step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner air.

By investing in EV infrastructure, businesses can lead the charge towards a more sustainable way of getting around, benefiting customers and the planet for years to come.

Future Proof

It’s also a smart move for the future. As more of us switch to EVs, organisations that invest in charging points now can manage the transition at pace, rather than rushing to catch up later at greater expense.

As governments around the world inevitably implement stricter regulations on emissions, businesses may well be required to reduce their carbon footprint. Installing EV charging stations could potentially help companies meet these regulatory requirements and avoid penalties.
