ZODIAC 7kW EV charger

Aesthetic by design…

The sleek and stylish Hydra Zodiac has been designed specifically for the UK EV home-charging market – IP65 weatherproofing to prevent dust and water ingress as well as UV protection – but also has a commercial sibling which can take advantage of a three-phase power grid to deliver a charging output of 22kW.

The Zodiac is a very affordable, lower cost option for the discerning EV owner as it offers a simpler installation without the need for an additional earthing rod and can be connected directly to the main consumer unit to give 7kW of smart charging power, either with an open socket to attach the cable that came with your EV or as a tethered design which includes a 5m cable. (Cables are also available separately if you wish to keep one at home as well as in the boot of your car).

The Hydra Zodiac can be set up as Plug’n’Play or operated via the Hydra Home smartphone app. It can communicate via WiFi or RJ45 Ethernet with charging times optimised to take full advantage of low-cost energy tariffs offered by some utility companies. In standby mode the power consumption is just 2w. Simple LED indicators will show the charging status of the vehicle.

Now available with Dynamic Load Balancing option which dynamically monitors total energy usage around the home. The Hydra DLB can optimise the power used by the Zodiac EV chargepoint to ensure total safety for the house and prevents overloading.

The Commercial 22kW Hydra Zodiac can utilise a three-phase power grid more commonly found in commercial and industrial premises to charge at the higher rate of 22kW for those vehicles which are able to make use of it.

Both 7kW and 22kW chargers can also be installed as part of a company-wide network offering multiple charge points in one car park or even at multiple sites nationwide. Our Hydra Cloud monitoring and management facility gives the real-time status of each individual charger as well as offering reports on peak and overall usage.

The highest possible standard of safety features are built in to every Hydra EV charger, the Zodiac benefits from over/under voltage protection, overload protection, leakage protection, over-current protection and built-in PEN detection.

The 7kW Hydra Zodiac EV charger comes with a 5-year warranty as standard.
(Requires installation and annual service by an OZEV approved EV chargepoint installer)

EV charger security and safety

RFID card control

Access to charging functions can be controlled by the used of a contactless RFID card. This can also be used to monitor individual usage and total charge time via our Hydra Cloud EV charging network facility.

OCPP Compliant

Secure data communications with Hydra Cloud and other charging control apps are OCPP1.6J compliant. This is the industry standard.

Emergency stop button

The emergency stop button (where fitted) shuts off all charging operations when manually activated.

PEN protection

Built in PEN protection removes the requirement for a separate earthing rod by detecting loss of the Protective Earth and Neutral (PEN) conductor and shutting down charging functions.

Over/under voltage protection

Limits charging functions when the input power from the grid becomes unstable and delivers an under or over voltage supply.

Over current protection

This protects the EV charging cables and other internal components of the EV charger from power overload and short-circuits.

Over temperature protection

Continuous temperature monitoring of the charging device and charging cables protects the entire charging system from overheating.

Phase Monitoring

This monitors and detects when one or more phases of a three-phase electrical system is lost or becomes unstable and shuts of charging functions.

Leakage protection

Shuts off all charging functions and output from the EV charger when a power leak is detected.

Battery reverse connection

Detects and shuts off all charging functions from the EV charger when it detects the battery in an electric vehicle has reverse polarity.

Insulation detection

Shuts off all charging functions when it detects insulation of the charging device, charge gun or charging cable may be  compromised.

Communication failure

Monitors and maintains continuous communications between the charger and the electric vehicle. When this communication fails, all charging functions are suspended.

In most instances no planning permission is required to install an EV chargepoint in a domestic or residential location, but it is always worth checking with your Local Council Planning Department to ensure there are no local restrictions in place.

See Planning Portal for more information: https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/electrics/electric-vehicle-charging-points

If you live in rented accommodation or rent a commercial property you should always gain permission of the Landlord and/or leaseholder before installing EV charging equipment.

Almost all private residential property - and an amount of commercial properties such as high street shops and offices - operate on the standard single-phase 240v electrical supply. If this is the case you will be limited to using a 7kW charger such as the Hydra Zodiac. However, larger shops, offices, industrial premises and warehouses are linked to a three-phase 400v supply which will allow for the installation and use of a higher powered EV charger.

No, all Hydra EV chargers draw a minimal 2W on standby. They are also protected with multiple built-in safety features which mean it is safe to leave the EV charger unattended for prolonged use.

All Hydra EV chargers can charge a range of EVs from private cars to electric mopeds and commercial vans to HGV delivery trucks. Anything that takes a regular Type 2 charger can be connected. For commercial and public installations access to the charger can be activated by the use of a contactless RFID card thus preventing unauthorised use.
