In a world rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), one would think that range anxiety should be a thing of the past. Yet, even in 2024, many drivers still hesitate to switch to electric due to concerns about the distance they can travel on a single charge. Despite advances in EV technology, range anxiety remains a real issue. But why? And more importantly, how can it be solved?

CEO of Hydra, Steven South, ‘’Range anxiety is often a myth that fades quickly once you experience driving an EV. The fear of running out of power disappears after realising how accessible charging stations are and that modern EVs have built-in navigation to find them. The real concern is whether a charge point works, but with multiple chargers at each destination, it’s usually just a matter of waiting. At Hydra, we ensure our chargers have at least 99% uptime, supported by a UK-wide engineering team and spare parts. We’re here to educate and support as the EV market grows.’’

Check out our latest series here:

https://hydrainstall.co.uk/?utm_source=article3&utm_medium=article3&utm_campaign=article3

What Exactly Is Range Anxiety? And When Is Range Really “Not Enough”?

Range anxiety, the fear that an EV will run out of charge before reaching its destination, often stems from a misunderstanding of both vehicle capability and available charging infrastructure. But what defines “sufficient range”?

From a technical perspective, sufficient range varies depending on the driver’s needs. For some, 200 miles might be more than enough for their daily commute; for others, a longer-range vehicle might still leave them anxious due to a lack of reliable charging options along the way.

Hydra’s Managing Director, Gavin James, explains: “Planning ahead is key to overcoming range anxiety. Knowing your vehicle’s charge and mapping suitable charging points along your route allows for stress-free breaks.

The Highway Code suggests a 15-minute break every two hours, which aligns well with EV charging needs. By driving an electric car, you naturally follow these recommendations, improving health, safety, and planning. Plus, factoring in seasonal traffic variations and routes ensures a smoother journey.

Forward planning with EVs is not only practical but also promotes safer and more mindful driving.’’

Is It Really About Range, Or Is It About Charging Infrastructure?

While EVs are becoming increasingly efficient, the real problem often lies in the public charging infrastructure. Limited access to fast chargers, or the concern of arriving at a broken or occupied station, feeds into range anxiety.

Europe, the UK, and other regions have ambitious plans for expanding the EV charging network, but there’s still a gap. And as the market for EVs grows, infrastructure needs to grow even faster to meet demand.

Why Do EV Drivers Still Get Range Anxiety Despite Technological Advances?

EV technology has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years. Batteries are more powerful and efficient, and vehicles can now travel much farther on a single charge than ever before. But psychological barriers persist. Many drivers are still in the habit of comparing EVs to traditional petrol or diesel cars, where refuelling infrastructure is omnipresent.

Public perception lags behind the reality of modern EVs, and media reports on issues like broken chargers or long wait times often exacerbate fears.

“This is as much a psychological issue as a technical one,” says Steven, Hydra’s CEO. “Drivers need education, clear communication, and confidence that EVs can meet their everyday needs.”

How Hydra Is Tackling Range Anxiety: A New Approach to EV Infrastructure

Hydra understands that to eliminate range anxiety, the EV charging experience needs to be seamless, reliable, and omnipresent. By focusing on smart, scalable, and future-ready charging solutions, Hydra is leading the charge (pun intended) in reducing the barriers to electric mobility.

Hydra’s range of DC fast chargers, ultra-fast chargers, and smart charging stations are designed to make charging quicker and more convenient. By integrating cutting-edge technology, including AI and IoT-enabled management systems, Hydra is ensuring that charging points are always online, easy to locate, and easy to use.

“We’re not just selling chargers; we’re building confidence,” says Jay Lawless, Hydra’s Head of Business Development. “Our mission is to create an ecosystem where EV drivers know they’ll always have access to the power they need, whether they’re at home, at work, or on the road.”

Building Tomorrow’s Charging Infrastructure Today

Hydra’s commitment to developing smart charging solutions doesn’t stop at today’s needs. As we transition to more electrified transportation systems, demand for reliable charging will increase. Hydra is already working on the next generation of charging stations that will handle future vehicle capabilities and even vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, where EVs can give back power to the grid.“We see range anxiety as a temporary problem,” says Lawless, Hydra’s Business Development Manager. “In the near future, with the right infrastructure in place, people won’t even think about range. It will be like using a smartphone—you simply charge it when you need to, without thinking twice.”

Driving the Future: What’s Next for EV Infrastructure

Range anxiety is one of the last psychological barriers to EV adoption, but with companies like Hydra leading the way, we’re on the verge of a breakthrough. The future of transportation is electric, and the key to unlocking that future is building the right infrastructure today.‘’Even with careful planning, arriving at a charge point only to find it out of order can cause stress, especially when the next one is down too, leading to range anxiety.

At Hydra, we understand the importance of reliability, which is why we prioritise fast, responsive technical support. Our UK-based team ensures maximum uptime for our public chargers, so drivers can trust their charging experience and focus on the journey. We’re committed to providing dependable, high-performance EV charging solutions.’’ Says Peter Lewin, Commercial Director for Hydra

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity, the demand for efficient and rapid charging solutions is rising significantly. Among the few charging options available, Fast DC Charging stands out for its ability to quickly power up an EV’s battery, making it a crucial part of the EV charging infrastructure. In this blog, we’ll delve into the world of Fast DC Charging, unravelling its mechanisms and exploring its significance.

Understanding DC Fast EV Charging:

Fast DC EV Charging, also known as Level 3 charging, is a charging method that sends high-voltage direct current (DC) power directly to an EV’s battery, bypassing the vehicle’s onboard charger. Unlike AC charging, which converts alternating current (AC) from the grid into DC power using the vehicle’s onboard charger, DC Fast Charging provides DC power directly to the battery, allowing for much faster charging rates.

How Does it Work?

Fast DC Charging stations are equipped with powerful chargers capable of converting AC power from the grid into high-voltage DC power suitable for charging EV batteries. When an EV is plugged into a DC Fast Charging station, the charger communicates with the vehicle to initiate the charging process. The charger then delivers the DC power to the EV’s battery through a specialized connector, such as CHAdeMO or CCS (Combined Charging System), depending on the vehicle’s compatibility and location.

Where are DC EV Chargers located

Fast DC EV Chargers are often strategically positioned along major motorways, urban centres, and area that have high traffic. These EV Chargers play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of electric vehicle infrastructure due to their rapid charging speeds. Offering convenience and accessibility to EV drivers during their journeys. Additionally, they are frequently installed at workplaces, flats, and commercial buildings, providing charging options for individuals with limited access to their own or private charging facilities. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, the expansion of DC EV charger networks is expected to grow, further enhancing the practicality and appeal of electric mobility.

Key Components:

Power Conversion Unit: Converts AC power from the grid into high-voltage DC power.

Charging Connector: Interfaces with the EV’s charging port and delivers the DC power to the battery.

Communication Protocols: Enable communication between the charging station and the EV to coordinate the charging process effectively.

Why is it Important?

Rapid Charging: Fast DC Charging enables EV drivers to charge their vehicles significantly faster than traditional AC charging methods, making long-distance travel more feasible.

Convenience: With shorter charging times, drivers can spend less time waiting at charging stations, enhancing the overall convenience of electric vehicle ownership.

Accessibility: The widespread deployment of DC Fast Charging infrastructure is essential for promoting the adoption of electric vehicles by addressing range anxiety and increasing the accessibility of charging options.

Supporting EV Growth: As the automotive industry transitions towards electrification, the availability of DC Fast Charging infrastructure is crucial for supporting the growing number of electric vehicles on the road.

Fast DC EV Charging plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of electric mobility by offering rapid and convenient charging solutions for EV drivers. As technology continues to advance and infrastructure expands, DC Fast Charging will continue to play an important part. Facilitating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and driving sustainable transportation forward.

As of recent the regulations have changed for electric vehicle charging, James Court, CEO, Electric Vehicle Association England, said: “Better reliability, clearer pricing, easier payments, plus the potentially game-changing opportunities of open data are all a major step forward for EV drivers and should make the UK one of the best places to charge in the world.” From late 2023 all rapid charging stations must accept contactless bank cards. This method eliminates the need for additional cards or apps, making it incredibly user-friendly for both occasional and regular EV drivers.

The conventional method of paying for charging involves scanning a QR code, leading to a virtual payment terminal for credit or debit card payments. However, this might pose issues for users without smartphones or in areas with poor signal. Managing multiple apps and websites for EV charging payments can be overwhelming and hopefully a thing of the past.

Hydra EVC has partnered with CPI to simplify this process for EV drivers, ensuring a hassle-free charging experience.
As the EV Market grows every single day it’s not a surprise that more businesses have started to adopt EV charging, whether that be AC or DC in their designated parking areas. This has many benefits including charging for the employees, customers and potentially the public, making the charger capable of making money. In this blog we will go over everything you need to know about workplace EV charging, why you need it, the benefits and what chargers are best for you.

Why should you Install workplace EV charging?

Workplace EV Charging has become a staple in transitioning the world to EV’s. For employees, charging at work is a convenient way to recharge their EV whilst working throughout the day. This may influence the overall mood and productivity of your employees as they will not need plan a route home with a charge point, if their range is limited.

For businesses, having multiple charge points at the workplace can offer charging for employees, visitors and potentially the public via apps such as ZAPMAP, making it profitable. Charge points are also essential for businesses with an EV fleet for day-to-day operation.

What EV chargers should you install at your workplace?

There are a lot of factors that go into selecting what EV chargers are best for your workplace:

Single or Three Phase supply

Firstly, it’s important to determine whether your workplace operates on a single or three-phase electrical supply, as this will significantly influence the type and number of EV chargers you can install. For locations with a single-phase supply, we recommend a maximum of 2x 7kW AC chargers, if they feature Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB). However, it’s essential to verify the presence of DLB to prevent circuit tripping. On the other hand, three-phase supplies allow for the installation of a greater number of charge points, including rapid DC EV chargers, which are ideal for users, such as fleet managers, in need of quick charging solutions.

Wall or Pedestal Mounted

Depending on the orientation of your car park will determine where you can have EV Chargers installed. Wall Mounted is often cheaper as you can run the wire against the wall and does not include the pedestal costs. Pedestal mounted EV chargers are more aesthetically pleasing and you’re able to put a barrier in front to protect the charge-point.

Socket or Tethered

Socketed EV charging means the charging cable is separate and brought by the user, while tethered EV charging has a fixed cable attached to the charging unit. The choice depends on user preference and convenience. Socketed charging offers lead flexibility as users can use their cable, while tethered charging provides convenience by having a fixed cable. While tethered charging is technically slightly faster than socketed the cable will have to be wrapped around nicely in order to minimise wear and tear.

The Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme is funded by the Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). It provides support for organisations towards the cost of installing up to 40 electric vehicle chargepoint sockets at their sites.

The scheme covers up to 75% of the total costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints (including VAT), capped at a maximum of:

£350 per socket

40 sockets across all sites per applicant – for instance, if you want to install them at 40 sites, you will have 1 socket available per site

It is open to eligible:

Businesses

Charities

Public Sector Organizations

Small Accommodation Nusinesses

There is a separate scheme with a different grant amount for state-funded education institutions.

All chargepoints must be installed by an OZEV authorised installer.

The scheme is only available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In summary, workplace EV charging is increasingly important as the electric vehicle market grows. It benefits both employees and businesses, offering convenience and potential revenue generation. Choosing the right chargers involves considering factors like electrical supply, mounting options, and socketed versus tethered charging. Government schemes like the Workplace Charging Scheme can help offset installation costs, making workplace EV charging an attractive option for businesses embracing sustainability.

Every little helps?

Something big is happening at UK supermarkets. Recent research by the RAC and Zapmap shows that one in every ten supermarkets now has electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. In 2023 alone, there was a whopping 59% increase.

Leading the way is Tesco, with over 1,305 charging points already in place. Sainsbury’s isn’t far behind, with plans to deploy 750 charging bays by the end of the year. It’s a clear sign of things to come.

Charge while you shop.

While no one was particularly expecting supermarkets to lead the charge on EV charging, it makes a lot of sense.

Zapmap found that a lot of EV drivers like to charge up while they do their weekly shop. In fact, more than 35% of people surveyed said they make charging part of their shopping routine.

Beyond Retail.

But it’s not just about supermarkets. In the UK around 15% of us already drive EVs, and that number is projected to increase dramatically in the coming years. The growth of commercial charging spots at supermarkets shows how all businesses can play a pivotal role in driving sustainable change.

Practically speaking, as more and more staff and customers drive EVs, charging stations are fast becoming a must-have facility for any organisation with significant parking capacity.

Good for Business.

From a commercial perspective, offering EV charging stations has a host of benefits. First, it reinforces your brand reputation as innovative, responsible, and modern.

Businesses that install charging points can position themselves as leaders on sustainability, attracting an increasingly climate-conscious consumer base.

EV charging also offers business the potential for a new revenue stream, offsetting the initial investment.

Good for the planet.

EVs produce fewer harmful emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars. The more electric cars on the road, the cleaner our air becomes. This helps reduce pollution and fights climate change, making our planet a healthier place to live for everyone.

For businesses, installing EV charging points is a step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner air.

By investing in EV infrastructure, businesses can lead the charge towards a more sustainable way of getting around, benefiting customers and the planet for years to come.

Future Proof

It’s also a smart move for the future. As more of us switch to EVs, organisations that invest in charging points now can manage the transition at pace, rather than rushing to catch up later at greater expense.

As governments around the world inevitably implement stricter regulations on emissions, businesses may well be required to reduce their carbon footprint. Installing EV charging stations could potentially help companies meet these regulatory requirements and avoid penalties.

Hydra EVC

At Hydra we combine almost three decades of experience in green tech and electronics with industry-leading customer care. Our next generation charging points are smarter, more reliable and designed for major commercial operations. Oh, and they look great too.

The HYDRA DION FAST DC EV CHARGER provides dynamic, load-balanced power distribution for up to two vehicles, each receiving 20kW or 30kW DC, depending on the configuration.

According to customer requirements, the Hydra Dion is fitted with single or double CCS2 charging cables. It can be connected to any three-phase AC input.

A fast DC charger with a lower power output can be a very cost-effective way to achieve faster charging times, compared to a standard AC wallbox, as it bypasses your EV’s onboard AC charger (which could be limited to 11kW).

This means an average family EV with a 60kWh battery could be fully recharged in under 3 hours compared to over 8 hours on a domestic 7kW chargepoint. Similarly, an electric commercial van with a 100kW battery could be recharged from 20% up to 80% charge in just 2 hours with the 30kW DION.
