The E-Transit Courier has been completely redesigned around a larger, more flexible cargo area that offers 26% more load volume than the outgoing model, plus increased payload and space for two Euro pallets.

The electric Courier will make its debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, UK, from April 18-20 and is scheduled to enter production in 2024. Customers will be able to order petrol- and diesel-engine Transit Courier models from summer 2023 for delivery before the end of the year.

The E-Transit Courier’s all-electric powertrain includes a powerful 100kW (136PS) motor and one-pedal driving capability. The range is yet to be confirmed.

Ford has stated that it expects the E-Transit Courier to be popular “with customers who charge at home” but go on to say that “Charging is targeting an 11 kW AC overnight home charge in 5.7 hours and charging can be scheduled to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy”. However the vast majority of at-home charging is limited to 7kW from units such as the Hydra Zodiac, charging at 11kW and above requires a commercial three-phase electrical supply and suitable charger such as the Hydra Genesis 22kW dual output charger

The van has a DC fast charge capability up to 100kW, which could potentially add 54 miles of range in just 10 minutes, and charge from 10-80 per cent in less than 35 minutes.

The E-Tourneo Custom targets both personal and business customers with its ability to easily transport eight occupants. The multi-activity vehicle’s all-electric powertrain also offers one-pedal drive capability for even greater energy efficiency, and a more relaxed and comfortable driving experience.

An onboard 11kW AC three-phase charger is capable of fully recharging the battery in less than eight hours, and a 15-80 per cent recharge takes around 41 minutes using a 125kW DC fast charger. E‑Tourneo Custom’s charge profile front-loads the energy to enable quick top-ups; in lab testing, using a 125kW DC fast charger added almost 23 miles     of range in just five minutes.

E-Tourneo Custom offers a maximum towing capacity of 2,000kg 6 along with a generous payload allowance, 7 helping adventurous owners carry friends, family and sports equipment with ease, and business operators transport customers and their luggage efficiently.

Pro Power Onboard technology also enables customers to fully utilise the potential of Tourneo Custom’s electrified variants, delivering up to 2.3kW through sockets in the front cabin – ideal for powering digital devices, tools or sports and camping equipment when off-grid.

It also offers new digital solutions for multi-drop deliveries, and cab and load compartment access. The cab is also a business hub, with 5G connectivity and a flexible workspace including smart features like a steering wheel that folds to become an ergonomic holder for laptops and tablets.

E-Transit Custom delivers payloads up to 1,100kg, a lower load floor with easier access, and maximum towing capacity of 2,000kg. Independent rear suspension and class-leading motor power help deliver a new level of driving experience for customers.

Ford Pro has also introduced the all-electric E-Transit, which has now sold more than 8,300 units, and E-Transit Custom is one of four new Ford Pro electric commercial vehicles coming to Europe by 2024. E-Transit Custom will be built by Ford Otosan in Kocaeli, Turkey, and is due to start production in autumn 2023.

E-Transit Custom’s 400-volt, 74kWh useable battery pack uses advanced 82Ah pouch cells shared with the Ford F-150 Lightning to deliver 12 per cent more energy density than the E Transit. The battery enables a targeted range of up to 236 miles . The battery’s direct to body mounting improves durability and reduces weight for optimum range.

Customers can choose from 100kW or 160kW (135PS or 217PS) motor power outputs to suit their needs, each offering a class-leading 415Nm of torque. The drive motor is fitted directly to the vehicle’s rear floor, removing the need for a dedicated subframe, and is rotated 90 degrees to maximise loadspace and reduce weight.

E-Transit Custom is the first-ever electric vehicle to use vapour-injected heat pump technology to heat and cool the cabin, fitted as standard to all vehicles. This new system is designed to deliver improved energy efficiency for optimum driving range.

E-Transit Custom features an energy-efficient braking system with one-pedal drive capability. The system blends friction braking with regenerative braking that harvests energy during deceleration to top up the battery for extra driving range. Drivers can stop the van without using the brake pedal when in one-pedal drive mode, 7 which drivers of the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach E liked and can make urban driving more relaxing and comfortable. Other available drive modes provide less deceleration to suit other driving scenarios. The system is designed to use the friction brakes frequently enough to prevent the discs from rusting or pitting.

E-Transit Custom’s 11kW AC three-phase onboard charger is capable of fully recharging the battery in 7.8 hours, so customers will be able recharge overnight after a shift. During busy days, they can track current charge state on-the-go using the FordPass Pro smartphone app.

E-Transit Custom also supports DC fast charging up to 125kW for a 15-80 per cent recharge in 41 minutes. A new charge profile front-loads the energy to enable quick, useful top-ups; in lab testing, the system delivered almost 24 miles of range in just 5 minutes using a 125kW charger. Ford Pro customers can access the Blue Oval Charging Network – Europe’s largest, with over 300,000 chargers and growing – and every E Transit Custom is sold with a 12-month complimentary subscription to access public charging via the Blue Oval Charging Network.

The HYDRA ZODIAC 22kW, HYDRA ECHO and HYDRA GENESIS can all deliver 11kW fast charging suitable for eLCVs like the Ford Transit Custom but require a three-phase electrical supply. For home charging the 7kW Hydra Zodiac is perfect for charging the e-Transit overnight at home,

The E-Transit Custom’s all-electric architecture is said to deliver a driving range of up to 236 miles, DC fast-charging and full towing capability. 

“This is a watershed moment for commercial vehicle operators in Europe, and another hugely significant realisation of our Ford Pro ambitions,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe. “Europe’s best-selling van just went all-electric and – supported by our unique Ford Pro one-stop-shop of productivity-boosting services – the operating benefits this will bring to business across Europe cannot be overstated.”

Among features developed using feedback from van users the E-Transit Custom is fitted with ProPower which will provide power for tools, lights and devices while on site.

Earlier this year Ford announced that by 2024, four further new all-electric vehicles will join the E-Transit two-tonne van as part of the iconic Transit family, including the Transit Custom and Transit Courier vans, as well as Tourneo Custom and Tourneo Courier people movers.

The all-electric E-Transit Custom will enter production in the second half of 2023 – part of the most extensive Transit Custom range ever offered to European customers. Further product details will be released in September 2022.

To meet demand for future electrified Ford models, Ford Otosan is investing €2 billion and growing employment by around 3,000 to increase vehicle production capacity, including for the next-generation Transit Custom model.

With its competitive range, payload, power and choice of bodystyles, Ford Pro has already proven E-Transit’s durability with demanding testing in high-tech facilities around the world. The company is now running a wider programme of customer pilots with a total of 60 pre-production E-Transits, including converted models, operating in typical daily use with customers across France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and the UK.
